Independence Day 2018: Locals thrash people who tried to hoist tricolour at Srinagar’s Lal Chowk

New Delhi:

Three non-locals were roughed up on Tuesday when they tried to unfurl the tricolour at Lal Chowk in Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital. They were later rescued by CRPF and police. 

According to reports, this resulted in tension in the area. Locals objected to the act, raised slogans and two people were arrested in the resulting scuffle.

Police in the evening issued a statement regarding the incident, saying they have registered a FIR in this regard. 

“Today afternoon (a) few persons came to Ghanta Ghar in connection with some political activity and some miscreants assembled at the scene and created disturbances by criminally intimidating them,” the police statement said.

Earlier, security was beefed up in Kashmir to thwart any possible strikes by the militants in the run-up to August 15 functions in Jammu and Kashmir. Several Close Circuit Television (CCTV) sets are functional to ensure tight vigil is maintained and prevent militants from striking. 

Meanwhile, authorities have suspended Amarnath Yatra for three days in view of Pakistan’s Independence Day on Tuesday and August 15 functions in J&K.
