Navy to get 111 new helicopters at Rs 21,000 crore

New Delhi:

In a major development towards modernisation of India’s Armed Forces, the Defence Ministry on Saturday approved procurement of 111 Utility Helicopters for the Indian Navy at a cost of whopping Rs. 21,000 crore.

In a bid to enhance the Navy’s capability at sea, approval was granted for 24 Anti-Submarine capable Multi-Role Helicopters, which the ministry said, would plug the existing capability gape.

In the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) meeting, chaired by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, approval was accorded to several projects worth approximately Rs. 46,000 crore, the ministry said in a press release.

Besides this, the ministry also okayed procurement of 150 Indigenously Designed and Developed 155 mm Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems for the Indian Army at the cost of nearly Rs 3,364.78 crore.

The ministry said that these guns were indigenously designed and developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) but will be manufactured by production agencies, as nominated by the military' s research and development.
