Indira Gandhi Birth Anniversary: PM Modi Tweets Tributes; Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh Pay Respects At Shakti Sthal

The nation is remembering former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 102nd birth anniversary on Tuesday. A host of leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Former President of India Pranab Mukerjee, former PM Manmohan Singh paid tribute to the former prime minister. Indira Gandhi, India's third Prime Minister of India, was popularly known as the 'Iron Lady'. She was the second longest serving prime minister after he father and India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. She held office for around 15 years across three terms. She is also India’s only female prime minister. Indira Gandhi was instrumental in inflicting a crushing defeat to Pakistan in 1971 and creation of Bangladesh. In 1974, during her tenure, India conducted its first nuclear test. However, she is also remembered for imposing India's first (and only) emergency.

Paying his respecs to Indira Gandhi, PM Modi tweeted, "Tributes to our former PM Smt. Indira Gandhi Ji on her birth anniversary."

Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and Pranab Mukherjee paid their tributes at Indira Gandhi's resting place Shakti Sthal.

Indira Gandhi was born on November 19, 1917 in Allahabad. She assisted her father as his personal assistant and hostess during his tenure as Prime Minister between 1947-1964. She was elected to the Rajya Sabha after his death in 1964 and became the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister in Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s government. In 1966, she became India’s third Prime Minister after the untimely passing away of Shastri in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
