Jammu and Kashmir: Encounter underway in Ratnipora area of Pulwama district

An Army jawan lost his life and two were injured on Tuesday during an encounter with terrorists in the Ratnipora area of the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. One terrorist was also neutralised during the operation. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Ratnipora area of Pulwama in south Kashmir during the night following specific information about the presence of militants there, a police official said. He said the search operation turned into an encounter after militants fired on the forces who retaliated. The exchange of fire was on, the official said, adding the area has been cordoned off. The identity and affiliation of the terrorist are being ascertained. In the encounter, two security forces personnel also sustained gunshot injuries and were evacuated to hospital for medical attention, however, one of the injured jawan Baljeet Singh attained martyrdom, official sources said.

Incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter. The police have registered a case and initiated an investigation in the matter.

On Sunday, a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Uri camp was thwarted after the security personnel of Army Artillery unit at Rajarwani noticed some suspicious movement around the camp and opened fire. The area had been cordoned off and was being searched jointly by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Indian Army. According to reports, two people have been detained and being examined in connection with the incident.

The security around the camp was been tightened and all local units of the Amry and the central paramilitary force deployed in the area were alerted.

In another incident, at least 11 persons were injured after a grenade was hurled on CRPF party near Palladium lane at Lal Chowk in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar district on Sunday. Soon after the incident, the injured have been shifted to nearby hospitals and are stable now. As per the latest reports, police has registered a case in this regard and have been working to establish the full circumstances of the incident. The area has been cordoned off.

"Three CRPF personnel, four J&K police personnel and four civilians have been injured in the grenade attack on CRPF party near Palladium lane at Lal Chowk, Srinagar," the news agency ANI reported.

The incident occurs hours after five terrorists were gunned down in an encounter with security forces Kulgam district. The gunbattle broke out after the ultras opened fire on a search team of the security forces in the district's Kellem village this morning. Weapons and war-like stores have been recovered from the encounter site.

Terrorists hurling grenades at CRPF, army jawans, police and security forces has become very frequent in Jammu and Kashmir. On January 31, a grenade was lobbed on security forces in Anantnag district, leaving seven people injured, including three women and two CRPF jawans.
