New Delhi:

There is an old proverb in India that says "its pointless to play music to a buffalo". However, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator believes playing flute in front of cows in the style similar to Lord Krishna will get you more milk.

Dilip Kumar Paul, a senior BJP MLA from Silchar in Assam, gave the suggestion to people of his constituency on Saturday during a cultural event, according to a report in Hindustan Times.

“I told the gathering about the positive impacts of music and dance and how it has been scientifically proved that if cows listen to tunes on flute, like the ones played by Lord Krishna, their milk production rises,” Paul was quoted in the report as saying.

Paul claimed that a Gujarat-based NGO had done some research a few years ago where the connection between flute tunes and increase in milk yield was proved.

While it may well be not possible to recreate the tunes played by Lord Krishna, there have been studies connecting music to production of milk.

According to the Modern Farmer magazine, cows feel at peace and relaxed when they listen to music and hence produce more milk.
The magzine cited a study by two psychologists from the University of Leicester in 2001. The study showed that cows produced 3% more milk when listening to soft, slow music.
