Kannada Rajyotsava 2019: Karnataka will celebrate the 'Karnataka Rajyotsava' (Karnataka State Festival) on Friday. The festival is also known as ‘Kannada Rajyotsava’ after the state’s official language. The Karnataka Rajyotsava is observed as a public holiday across the state. Kannada-speaking regions of South India were merged to form the state of Karnataka on November 1, 1956. To mark the day, the government will confer Rajyotsava award on talented people in various fields for their contribution. The day also features a cultural show, which is inaugurated by the Chief Minister, at the Sri Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru.

Karnataka Rajyotsava Celebrations

The Karnataka stage flag features prominently in the Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations. The Karnataka state flag - bearing the colours yellow and red - is hoisted acorss the state. People also sing the state anthem 'Jaya Bharatha Jananiya Thanujate...Jaya hai Karnataka mate.'

Karnataka Rajyotsava History

On November 1, 1956, the Kannada speaking regions in Madras and Mumbai presidencies along with Hyderabad were merged to form what is called as the Mysore state. In 1976, when Devaraj Aras was the chief minister the name was changed to Karnataka.

Karnataka Rajyotsava Awards

Karnataka state government gives out 'Rajyotsava Awards on this day to people who have made great contributions towards the development of Karnataka. This year 64 eminent personalities will be conferred the Rajyotsava Award. Rajyotsava awards are given to people in various fields including literature, theatre, music, folk art, sculpture, painting, sports, yoga, films, television, Yakshagana, Bayalata, education, journalism, social service, agriculture, environment, medicine, and judiciary.

Seed Flags To Be Distributed To Students

On Karnataka Rajyotsava Day, Eco Friends Group will distribute seed flags to students with an aim to encourage gardening among school students. They will also encourage people to celebrate Kannada Rajyotsava eco-friendly way and to put an to use of plastic flags on the ocassion.
