New Delhi:

Punjab Cabinet Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Sunday dashed a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan requesting them to take necessary measures to preserve the sanctity of Kartarpur Sahib and Dera Baba Nanak Gurudwara Sahib. Earlier in 2018, Khan had laid the foundation stone for the Kartarpur corridor that will connect Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan to Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district of Punjab.

"Punjab Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu has written letters to PM Narendra Modi and Pakistan PM Imran Khan suggesting measures to be taken up by Govts of both countries, to preserve the sanctity of Kartarpur Sahib and Dera Baba Nanak Gurudwara Sahib," the news agency ANI reported.

Being touted as a ground-breaking initiative towards ending the enmity between the hostile neighbours India and Pakistan, the Imran Khan government’s gesture to open the corridor was praised by many in India. The corridor is expected to be completed by June 2019.

The four-km corridor will connect Dera Baba Nanak in India's Gurdaspur district with Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib in Narowal in Pakistan. It will provide access to Indian Sikh pilgrims to the historic shrine in the neighbouring country. However, the mode of access for Indian devotees headed for Kartarpur Sahib Gurudwara in Pakistan is yet to be decided by both the countries.

Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, is believed to have spent more than 18 years of his life at the historic shrine. The Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara is located on the banks of Ravi river, about three-four kilometres from the Indo-Pak border.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the corridor was performed by Pakistani PM Imran Khan in the presence of Pak Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Union Ministers Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Hardeep Singh Puri and Punjab Cabinet Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu. On India side, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had laid the foundation stone of the corridor in Gurdaspur last year.
