New Delhi:
Several protests - some peaceful, some violent - erupted across India on Monday against the police crackdown in Jamia Millia Islamia and the controversial citizenship law as students and political leaders took to the streets, even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi called these protests “deeply distressing” and appealed for peace. Amid protests, an all-party delegation will meet President Ram Nath Kovind today. According to the sources, the meet will take place at 4.30 pm at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Opposition politicians and activists say the Citizenship Amendment Act, which was passed last week by Parliament, is an attempt to divide the country along religious lines as it grants citizenship to Hindu minorities from the three neighbouring countries. They say such a preference is unconstitutional.
