One person was killed in Meerut as six people lost their lives in violence related to the protests against Citizenship Amendment Act on Friday in Uttar Pradesh. Islamabad police chowki in Meerut was set on fire by agitators. Mobile internet services have been suspended in the city till Saturday evening. All schools are also closed in view of the situation.

Protesters on Friday pelted stones at police personnel during a demonstration against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at Lisari Gate, Meerut. In a video of the incident, police personnel were also seen pelting stones at the crowd when a clash broke out between the police force and the agitated crowd. Police also resorted to lathi-charge during the protest in order to control the crowd.

In the state-wide protests, there were reports of firing on police parties at various places, officials said. Police retaliated with teargas shells followed by rubber bullets, they said.

Director General of Police O P Singh told PTI that two people lost their lives in Bijnor and one each in Meerut, Sambhal and Firozabad. But officials reported a death in Kanpur as well. Singh said over 50 policemen seriously injured during the protests.
