Times of India’s Hyderabad resident editor KR Sreenivas resigns
Days after Hindustan Times' political affairs editor Prashant Jha stepped down as the bureau chief over a sexual harassment charge, The Times of India’s Hyderabad resident editor KR Sreenivas has resigned over similar allegations. Jaideep Bose, the ToI’s editorial director, confirmed the resignation to The News Minute.
Sreenivas, who was first accused of sexual harassment by journalist Sandhya Menon in a Twitter thread last week, reportedly said in his resignation letter that he was resigning as he was being “targetted”.
Sandhya has accused Sreenivas of inappropriately touching her when he was dropping her home one night in 2008. She asked Sreenivas to take his hand off her thigh and immediately left the spot in disgust and anger. Sandhya has claimed that the next day she had registered a complaint against Sreenivas’ misconduct with the Human Resources department, but no action was taken against him. Sandhya then went to the committee for sexual harassment at Bennett, Coleman and Co Ltd (BCCL) to seek justice but the woman who headed BCCL at that point in time had said that she had known him for a long time and it was unlikely that he would act in that way. Soon after Sandya’s tweets, at least seven women alleged that they were harassed by Sreenivas, and wrote a petition to the Times of India seeking action against him.
India's #MeToo movement, which started with Tanushree Dutta alleging that actor Nana Patekar harassed her during a film shoot in 2008, has escalated sharply with increasing numbers of women coming forward with their complaints. The movement has sent shock waves across industries such as film, music and the media.
On Monday, Journalist Prashant Jha stepped down as the chief of bureau and political editor of the Hindustan Times following an allegation of sexual misconduct against him.
Actor Alok Nath, directors Vikas Bahl, Sajid Khan and Luv Ranjan, author Kiran Nagarkar and Chetan Bhagat, Union minister and former journalist MJ Akbar are among the famous personalities who have been accused of sexual harassments.
