Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised a grand welcome for US President Donald Trump and Motera stadium perfectly lived up to the expectations. In an brilliant welcome for the US President, PM Modi opened his speech with ‘Namaste, Trump’ to thunderous cheers that reverberated the largest cricket stadium in the world. “I think today we can see history being repeated. 5 months back I started my US trip with 'Howdy Modi' and today my friend President Donald Trump is starting his Indian trip with 'Namaste Trump' here in Ahmedabad.” PM Modi said, “You are heartily welcome in the largest democracy of the world. This is Gujarat but the entire country is enthusiastic in welcoming you.” Namaste Trump LIVE UPDATES

Talking about the significance of ‘Namaste’, PM Modi said, “The meaning of the name of this event - 'Namaste' is very deep. This is a word from the oldest languages of the world - Sanskrit. It means that we pay respect to not only to the person but also to the divinity inside him.” He also spoke about the better ties between two nations. “India-US relations are no longer just another partnership. It is a far greater and closer relationship. One is 'land of the free' the other believes the world is one family. One feels proud of 'statue of liberty' the other feels proud of 'statue of unity.”

He also extended warm welcome to the other members of the Trump family. “First Lady Melania, your presence here is an honour for us. The work you did for healthy and happy America is yielding its result. The work you did for children and the society is commendable,” PM Modi said. “There is so much that we share, like shared values and ideals, a shared spirit of enterprise and innovation. Shared opportunities and challenges, shared hopes and aspirations,” the Prime Minister concluded.  

Over 10,000 police personnel, besides officials of the United States Secret Service, and personnel of the National Security Guards (NSG) and the Special Protection Group (SPG) have been deployed for the high profile visit.  Bollywood singer Kailash Kher and some Gujarati folk singers performed at the stadium, officials of the Gujarat Cricket Association said. Students of various government and private schools were also roped in to perform at cultural events and they have been practicing for days, an official added.
