The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday observed the martyrdom day of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, who was the founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh. BJP Working President JP Nadda visited the Shahidi Park in the national capital and paid tributes to Dr Mukherjee. After paying tribute Nadda said, “The whole country demanded an inquiry into Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee's death, but Pandit Nehru did not order an inquiry. History is witness to this. Dr. Mukherjee's sacrifice will never go in vain, BJP is committed to this cause.â€
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also remembered Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on his 66th death anniversary. PM Modi took to Twitter and said that Dr. Mukherjee was a devout patriot and proud nationalist. "Dr. Mookerjee devoted his life for India's unity and integrity. His passion for a strong and united India continues to inspire us and gives us strength to serve 130 crore Indians," PM Modi tweeted.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah other leaders of the party paid tribute to Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on his death anniversary at BJP Headquarters.

The West Bengal government also announced that it will observe the death anniversary of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on Sunday. A letter issued by the Information and Cultural Affairs department of the state government stated, "State Government will observe the death anniversary of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on June 23 at 11:30 AM at the Keoratala burning ghat, Kolkata."
"Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, Minister for Power and Non-Conventional Energy Sources Department will offer the floral tributes on the day at the memorial column of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on behalf of the state government," the letter added.
Mukherjee was born in Kolkata. He was the founder of Jan Sangh. He was Minister of Commerce and Industries from 1951 to 1952.
