New Delhi:

Coming down heavily on Kerala MLA PC George over his derogatory comments about the rape victim nun from Kerala, National Commission for Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma on Sunday demanded strict action against the Poonjar leader saying, she is ashamed of such lawmaker, who are giving these statements instead of helping women.

"NCW has already taken up the matter and we will write to DGP demanding strict action against him," Sharma was quoted by ANI as saying.

The NCW chief, furthermore, revealed some shocking details and said "I met her in person. She was protesting against the Bishop and demanding justice for herself. I have seen her being denounced by the church. She was denied basic facilities like ration and stipend".

Addressing a press conference in Kottayam, the Independent MLA sparked off controversies after he described the nun as a “prostitute” in front of media and raised questions about her allegations against the Bishop.

"I initially thought the Bishop was detestable. But after examining the case, I realise this nun is a troublemaker," George went on to make some callous comments on such a gender-sensitive issue.

Reacting strong to such abusive statements, CPM leader Subhashini Ali also lashed out at PC George saying, in such a situation for somebody who is a public figure to make this comment is horrible. Subhashini also hailed the nun's courage to fight back against a Bishop, who is head of the organisation.

"I condemn PC George’s bid to paint the nun who was abused and those who have come out in support of her in a bad light," former state Congress chief VM Sudheeran wrote on Facebook.

George’s ugly attack came hours after nuns and priests took to the streets, demanding justice for the victim. The MLA also targeted three other nuns, who also accused the Bishop of sexual abuse. “First cross-examine them and see if they are really holy,” George alleged.

Meanwhile, members of Joint Christian Council in Kochi have been staging protests for the second consecutive day demanding the arrest of Bishop of Jalandhar Franco Mulakkal. The protest is underway at High Court Junction bus station in the city.
