Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the commemorative Rs 100 coin in honour of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the Parliament House on Monday, a day before the latter’s birth anniversary. Also present during the occasion were Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Amit Shah, Union Minister Mahesh Sharma, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and senior BJP leader LK Advani. The coin weighs 35 gram and has the portrait of the former prime minister with his name inscribed in the Devanagari script as well as English on one side. The bottom of the image on the coin has the birth and death year ---1924-2018 – of Atal Bihari Vajpayee inscribed on it.Â
On the other side of the coin, it has a portrait of the Lion Capital of Ashoka Pillar in the centre with ‘Satyameva Jayate’ inscribed below along with the word ‘Bharat’ in the Devnagari script on the left periphery and ‘India’ in English on the right periphery.

As per reports, a government statement read, “The inscription ‘अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी’ in Devanagri script and ‘Atal Bihari Vajpayee’ in English shall be written on the top left periphery and top right periphery of the coin. The year ‘1924’ and ‘2018’ in international numeral shall be flanked at the bottom of the portrait’’.
Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee died on August 16 this year at the age of 93. He was the prime minister of India for 13 days in 1996, 13 months in 1998 and for complete five years in 1999.

This is not the only step taken in honour of the former prime minister of India. Earlier, four Himalayan peaks were named after him and Chhattisgarh’s Naya Raipur was also been renamed to ‘Atal Nagar’.
Recently, the Uttarakhand government decided to rename the Dehradun airport after him. Even, Lucknow’s popular Hazratganj Chauraha would now be called ‘Atal Chowk’.
