Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who began his maiden foreign visit after his re-election in this Lok Sabha polls, on Saturday arrived in the Maldives, the tropical nation in the Indian Ocean composed of 26 ring-shaped atolls. Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid recieved Modi at Male airport around 4 pm this afternoon. The prime minister was also seen interacting with a little lass, who welcomed and greeted him with a bouquet of flowers at the airport. Modi's visit to the Maldives is aimed at further cementing ties with the Indian Ocean archipelago and reflecting the importance India attaches to its 'Neighbourhood First' policy. During his visit to the country, Modi has been also conferred with the Maldives' highest honour "Rule of Nishan Izzuddeen".

Ahead of his first bilateral visit after retaining power in general elections 2019, Modi said India considers Maldives as a valued partner with whom it shares deep bonds of history and culture. In November, Modi had paid visit to the Maldives to take part in the swearing-in ceremony of President Ibrahim Solih.
