Pranab Mukherjee Funeral : Bharat Ratna Former President's last rites performed with state honour, PM Modi pays tribute

Former president and Bharat Ratna Pranab Mukherjee died on Monday evening following a long battle with multiple ailments. He was 84. He was admitted to the Army’s Research and Referral Hospital on August 10 for brain clot removal. Former president had also tested positive for COVID19 on the same day of admission in the hospital.

Former President's mortal remains reached his Delhi residence at Raja Ji Marg. Meanwhile, the Centre has declared seven-day state mourning following the demise of former President Pranab Mukherjee. The last rites of former president was performed by his son Abhijit Mukherjee.

Because of ongoing COVID pandemic, the mortal remains of Pranab Mukherjee arrived at the crematorium in a hearse van instead of the gun carriage. Defence Ministry officials said that due to the requirement of following social distancing norms and other Covid-19 related protocols, the mortal remains of the former President were taken in a hearse van instead of the normal gun carriage.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chiefs of three defence services were among the dignitaries who paid their last respects to Bharat Ratna former President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday morning. Earlier, expressing grief over demise of former president Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as a scholar par excellence and a towering statesman who was admired across the political spectrum. The PM said Mukherjee has left an indelible mark on the nation’s development.
