President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday greeted people on the occasion of Deepawali. Taking to Twitter, PM Modi wrote: "May this auspicious festival brighten the lives of people with prosperity and good health and may there be happiness all around."

President Kovind while extending greetings wrote, "Greetings and best wishes to fellow citizens on the auspicious occasion of Deepawali. Let us on this day try to bring happiness in the lives of those who are less fortunate and needy by lighting the lamp of love, care and sharing."

Diwali, the festival of lights, celebrates the victory of the King of Ayodhya, Lord Rama, over the demon king Ravana of the kingdom of Lanka. On this day, houses are decorated with lights as well as flowers, accompanied by Goddess Lakshmi's puja.

The festival is celebrated in the Hindu month of Kartika. Diwali coincides with the darkest day of the year, known as Amavasya. The day is the darkest of the Hindu lunisolar calendar and according to Hindu mythology, residents of Ayodha burned lamps to illuminate King Rama’s return to his kingdom.

On the main day of Diwali, Goddess Lakshmi, or the goddess of wealth and prosperity, is worshipped. People also exchange gifts, sweets and seek blessing of elders.
