Five Killed After Wall Collapses In Pune’s Sahakar Nagar

At least five people were killed on Wednesday late night after a wall collapsed in Pune’s Sahakar Nagar following heavy rainfall. As soon as the unfortunate incident was reported, the fire tenders reached the spot and conducted rescue operation. Five bodies were recovered during rescue operations carried out by the officials of the fire department. 

In the meantime, Prashant Ranpise, the chief of Fire Brigade, stated that water-logging was reported in Sinhgad Road, Dhanakwadi, Balajinagar, Ambegaon, Sahakar Nagar, Parvati, Kolhewadi and Kirkatwadi. 

Earlier, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast severe thunderstorm in Mumbai and adjoining regions of Maharashtra on Wednesday. According to the IMD, heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms are expected in several parts of Maharashtra on Thursday and the intensity is expected to reduce by the end of September 27.  

It is worth mentioning here that Pune’s Shivajinagar area received more than 46 mm rainfall in a single hour during the intervening night between Monday and Tuesday. The area received another 87.3 mm rainfall between Tuesday and Wednesday. On the other hand, Pashan area of Pune received 71.8 mm rainfall during the same time.  

On Tuesday, a 10-year-old girl died after she was trapped under the debris of a partially collapsed building in the Khar area of Mumbai.   

In July this year, 21 people were killed in three separate cases of wall collapse in Mumbai’s Malad city, Kalyan and Pune. A wall of a school had crashed upon two adjacent houses in Kalyan near, killing three, including a three-year-old boy. Six people were killed and three others injured after a wall of Sinhgad College, Ambegaon collapsed. On the same day, in another incident, 13 people were killed and four others critically injured after a compound wall collapsed due to heavy rain in Mumbai's Malad East.
