A local Ahmedabad court on Friday granted anticipatory bail to former Congress president Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case for calling Union Home Minister Amit Shah a "murder accused" at an election rally in Jabalpur.

The Gandhi scion had appeared before the metropolitan magistrate court and pleaded not guilty. He had also sought interim bail in the case. The court accepted his request and granted him interim protection from arrest until the next hearing on December 7.

BJP corporator Krishnavadan Brahmbhatt had filed the case of criminal defamation against Gandhi. Addressing an election rally in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur, Rahul Gandhi on May 23 had called Amit Shah a “murder accused”.

"Murder accused BJP President Amit Shah....waah! kya shaan hai....” Gandhi said in an apparent reference to the Sohrabuddin case in which he had to face charges of murder. Shah was acquitted in the case in 2014 and even Supreme Court declined a plea to probe him again.

Gandhi had appeared before a Surat court in connection with yet another defamation case. This case was in connection with his remark "why do all thieves share the Modi surname". Purnesh Modi, a legislator from Surat-West, had filed the case against Rahul Gandhi for defaming the people with Modi surname.
