Amid the continuous exodus of migrants from the Indian cities to the villages during the ongoing coronavirus lockdown, former Congress chief and current Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi blasted the Narendra Modi government for the deplorable situation of the urban poor hit by job loss and hunger. Gandhi took to Twitter to slam the government for the mismanagement. (Coronavirus Outbreak LIVE Updates)

"The government is responsible for this horrible situation. Putting citizens in such a condition is a big crime. In today's troubled times, our brothers and sisters should get the dignity they deserve. The government must take some concrete steps to avoid this tragedy." Earlier in the day, Gandhi and also appealed people to provide food and water to those who are walking on foot to reach their homes.

 

On Saturday, News Nation reporter saw queue running into several kilometres at Anand Vihar in east Delhi. The area borders Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. The Yogi Adityanath government has made special arrangements to bring back the migrants from various parts of Delhi. Not just Delhi, similar scenes were played out in other parts of the country. Be it Chandigarh, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru,  hundreds of migrant workers were seen walking on foot to reach their native places. 

 

In Delhi, the Arvind Kejriwal government is also running the buses to send these migrants to border areas. From these bordering regions, states like Uttar Pradesh will ferry back the people to their villages. "We have also provided some DTC buses to transport them. I urge people to stay put where they are," Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said. "We have started converting schools here (Ghazipur) into nigh shelters to accommodate these people. I request people to not leave their homes or shanties. Homeless people can stay at night shelters. We have the capacity to feed the people of entire Delhi," he added. 

Meanwhile, a pregnant migrant from Bihar in labour gave birth in an ambulance after the Karnataka police allegedly refused to allow the ambulance carrying her to cross the border road to Mangaluru to reach her hospital. The border road was shut due to the lockdown. The woman used to consult a doctor in Mangaluru across the border. As Karnataka police stopped the vehicle at the border in Talapady, saying no vehicle, including ambulances from Kerala, could be permitted to their state, the drivers decided to take the woman was taken to the general hospital here, but she went into labour and delivered a baby girl in the vehicle Both the mother and baby are doing fine, authorities said.
