Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on Shravana Purnima, also known as Rakhi Purnima. The best time to tie Rakhi on Raksha Bandhan is during Aparahna, which is late afternoon according to Hindu division of the day. Raksha Bandhan rituals should not be performed during Bhadra. Bhadra is malicious time which should be avoided for all auspicious works.
The Rakhi Thali embodies all the elements required in the ritual. The Rakhi Thali consists of Roli, Tilak, Rakhi, grains, rice, incense sticks and sweets.
Sisters perform Aarti of their brothers on Raksha Bandhan with the Puja thali.
The rituals and proceedings take place amidst the following mantra chanting:
Suraja Sakhan Chodia, Muli Chodia Beej, Behan Ne Rakhi Bandhi, Bhai Tu Chir Jug Jee.
The Sun invokes sunlight and the radish spreads seeds; a sister ties Rakhi on a brother's wrist and wishes he lives long. Then, she ties the Rakhi on her brother's wrist.
The mantra is chanted:
Yeena Badho Bali Raja Daanavendro Mahabala. Tena Twaam Anubadhnaami Rakshe Maa Chala Ma Chala.
Meaning: I am tying you the Rakhi that had been tied to King Bali and I believe you will always keep your responsibility to protect me
