Holy Month of Ramadan begins

Today marks the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan for the year 2016. This is the month of intense prayers, fasting and good deeds. Millions of Muslims around the world observe fasting every year in the month of Ramadan. The Ruyat-e-Hilal (moon sighting) committee announced the sighting of moon last evening.

Muslims throng mosques to offer Taraweeh (night prayer) the intention to keep Roza a night before which will continue throughout the month of Ramadan. This annual observance is considered as one of the five pillars of Islam.

What is this holy month of Ramadan actually about?

Ramadan is considered the most sacred month of the year for by Muslims. It is believed that it was during this month that God revealed the first verses of the Quran, Islam's sacred text, to Prophet Mohammed. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast everyday for 30 days from sunrise to sunset. This fasting is not merely abstinence of food but it also involves a deep connection with one’s spiritual connection. It is a period when people get a chance to cleanse themselves of all sins, bad thoughts show charity and generosity and recite Quran sharif.

This month is of vital importance and is being seen as the most blessed months of all. Muslims believe during Ramadan, gates of heaven are opened and hell gates are closed, devils are chained.

What are the Dos and Donts of Ramadan?

One cannot eat or drink during Roza of fasting period. It is also required to contemplate deeply within, to think good of others and surround yourself with positivity. During Roza one is also expected not to draw ire or use any expletives as you are fasting to please God.

Increase intake of proteins and vitamins

The night before fast, eat a meal including a lean protein, healthy fat and plenty of vegetables. Add fruits to your diet that will provide some natural sugar to the body. Try low-glycemic fruits like berries.

Drink plenty of water in Sehri, to avoid dehydration. Take vitamins and minerals if required. A basic multivitamin that provides 100 per cent of the daily intake is beneficial.

Prepare your body, mind and soul

For fasting, make sure you are emotionally and physically prepared. Avoid stress. Do not overindulge yourself with things that may cause frivolous thoughts.
