The outrage over the rape and murder of the Hyderabad veterinary doctor reached the Rajya Sabha on Monday with lawmakers across party lines demanding stringent measures to curb the rise in the disturbing trend of crime against women. Actor-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan made a scathing remark and said that such men (rapists) should be lynched publicly. “I don't know how many times I have spoken about it. Be it Nirbhya, Kathua or Hyderabad, there’s just no let-up. No justice has been done to these people. These kind of people (accused in rape) should be brought out in public and lynched," Bachchan said. “I think it is time the people now want the government to give a proper and a definite answer,” Bachchan added.
During the discussion, Rajya Sabha Chairperson Venkaiah Naidu said that, “we need to kill the social evil.” However, he said that there was ‘no need of enacting new law.’ “There should be some fear. Use of drugs must be curbed,” Naidu said.
The gruesome rape and murder of the young doctor also rocked the Lok Sabha. As soon as proceedings began, Congress members displayed posters and raised the Hyderabad rape case. They were also joined by members from the DMK and BSP, among others. Noting that the House is also concerned, Speaker Om Birla told members that the matter can be discussed during the Zero Hour and decided to continue with the Question Hour. "Is vishay par charcha karenge (We will discuss this matter)," he said.
Birla also cautioned that members should not carry posters inside the House and break traditions. Congress members were seen holding posters demanding justice for the Hyderabad rape victim. On November 29, four men, aged between 20 and 24, were arrested on charges of raping and killing the young woman veterinarian in Hyderabad.
During the ongoing police probe, it has been revealed that the accused forced liquor down the doctor’s throat. Unconscious, the doctor was not able to call for help. The accused - Mohammed Areef, Chintakunta Chennakesavulu, Jollu Naveen and Jollu Shiva - took turns to rape her. When she started bleeding and gained back her sense, Areef smothered her to death. The police probe also says that to remove all the evidence, the accused decided to dump the body. They wrapped the body in a bedsheet and set it on fire near Ashiyana Hotel in Chhattanpalli.
