New Delhi:

Apoorva Shukla Tiwari, the wife of former Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand chief minister ND Tiwari’s son Rohit Shekhar Tiwari, has been sent to 14-day judicial custody in connection with her husband's murder. On Wednesday, Delhi's Saket Court sent Shukla to two-day police custody after Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Deepak Sherawat allowed police for her custodial interrogation.

Apoorva, a lawyer practicing in the Supreme Court, was being questioned in connection with the killing since last Sunday. However, Sherawat sent Shukla to jail after the police on Friday informed the court that her custodial interrogation was not required.

"Rohit Shekhar Tiwari death case: Apoorva Tiwari (wife of Rohit Shekhar Tiwari) sent to 14-day judicial custody by Delhi's Saket Court," the news agency ANI reported.

On April 26, Apoorva was arrested on charges of Tiwari's murder, citing a "turbulent and unhappy" marriage as the motive. Rohit Shekhar, the son of the late Congress veteran ND Tiwari, was smothered to death on the intervening night of April 15 and 16, an autopsy report revealed.

During four days of intense interrogation, Apoorva did not break down once but sometimes appears to be regretting her action, adding that Tiwari's mother, Ujjwala's interference between them affected their relationship.

On the night Tiwari was killed, he and Apoorva were in their room at the Defence Colony residence when they had a fight over Tiwari's proximity with his sister-in-law.

The argument turned violent for the worse as Apoorva held on to Tiwari's neck and when he tried to raise an alarm, she choked him with a pillow. According to police, Tiwari was short-tempered and the couple often fought over trivial issues since their marriage about a year ago.

Initially, it was suspected that he had died of natural causes but after an autopsy, it was found he was "smothered" with a pillow. Bedsheets, pillows, Tiwari's clothes have been sent for forensic examination.
