New Delhi:

Former Delhi University lecturer SAR Geelani, who was arrested on Tuesday in a sedition case, has been sent to two-day police custody by Patiala House Court.

The police had on Tuesday arrested him on sedition and other charges in connection with an event in the national capital, where anti-India slogans were raised.

“Geelani was arrested around 3 AM at the Parliament Street police station under IPC sections 124A (sedition), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 149 (unlawful assembly),” DCP (New Delhi) Jatin Narwal had said.

Geelani was detained on Monday night and was questioned for several hours by the police, following which he was arrested.

The development comes amid a row over the arrest of JNU students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar, who was also arrested on sedition charges last week for holding an event against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

Geelani along with three other speakers was on the dias at a Press Club event on February 10 and a group had allegedly shouted slogans hailing Afzal Guru. A case was registered against Geelani and others on February 12 as the police claimed that the former was presumed to be the “main organiser” of the event.
