New Delhi:

Senior Congress leader and parliamentarian from Thurunathapuram, Shashi Tharoor, raked up another controversy on Sunday with his remarks that it was “safer to be a cow” in many places in India than being a Muslim.

“BJP Ministers' claims about reduction in communal violence don't stand up to the facts: It seems safer in many places to be a cow than a Muslim,” Tharoor tweeted.

When asked to explain his tweet, the Congress MP evaded the questions by journalists.

The remarks also came days after a 28-year-old Akbar Khan was lynched by a mob in Alwar district of Rajasthan on suspicion of cow smuggling.

Recently, Tharoor had triggered a massive controversy with his remarks that India will become a “Hindu Pakistan” if the Narendra Modi-led BJP government returned to power in 2019.

“If they (BJP) win a repeat in the Lok Sabha our democratic constitution as we understand it will not survive as they will have all the elements they need to tear apart the constitution of India and write a new one. That new one will be the one which will enshrine principles of Hindu Rashtra, that will remove equality for minorities, that’ll create a Hindu Pakistan,” he had said during an event in his constituency.

The BJP took the strong exception to Tharoor’s remarks and demanded an apology from him and Congress president Rahul Gandhi.
