Maa Katyayani is believed to have taken birth as the daughter of Rishi Katyayan in the avatar of Maa Durga, therefore, she is called Katyayani. Seated riding a powerful lion, she is depicted carrying a sword and the lotus flower in her right hands while keeping her right hands abhaya and varada mudras.

In her sixth form as Goddess Katyayani, Maa is worshipped by young unmarried girls for early nuptial, as it is believed that in mythological times Gopis used to pray to Devi Katyayani for Lord Krishna.
