A district court in West Bengal's East Burdwan district has sent nine BJP supporters to 14 days' judicial custody for allegedly assaulting Jadavpur University student Debanjan Ballabh Chatterjee, who was seen pulling the hair of Union Minister Babul Supriyo last month. Supriyo had promised his mother that he will not harm his son, neither will register any FIR. He was reportedly thrashed by students the Varsity allegedly by Left student wing members on September 19.

"On Thursday, they were sent to police custody for 14 days. They had assaulted Debanjan Ballabh, who filed a complaint alleging assault on Wednesday evening. We identified the assaulters with the help of CCTV footage," the Hindustan Times quoted Pintu Saha, inspector-in-charge of Burdwan police station, as saying.

In a police complaint filed by Chatterjee, he and his female friend were beaten up by the supporters of the BJP when they were waiting for a bus to Kolkata at Alisha bus stand in Burdwan. He also claimed that his attackers told him that he will have to pay for the Babul Supriyo incident.

On September 19, Supriyo was heckled allegedly by SFI and AISA students when he went to address a seminar organised by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Jadavpur University.

After the incident, Supriyo had assured Chatterjee's mother that he will not harm his son. "Don't worry Aunty - I'll not do any harm to your son !! I want him to learn from his mistakes. I didn't file any FIR against anyone. You don't worry - recover soon," he had said.
