Sushma Swaraj at UNGA: EAM takes on Pakistan for 'breeding terrorism', calls for UNSC reforms

External Affairs Minister (EAM) Sushma Swaraj is likely to take on Pakistan over the issue of terrorism when she addresses the high-level United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Saturday. Swaraj is also expected to reiterate India’s long-pending demand of a permanent seat in the UN Security Council (UNSC). Swaraj’s address will come two days after Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi ‘s statement that India was blocking the progress of SAARC during an informal meeting between foreign ministers of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) on the sidelines of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). India's address at the UNGA will begin at 7:15 pm.

# Sushma Swaraj on UNSC reforms: "The United Nations must accept that it needs fundamental reform. Reform cannot be cosmetic. We need change the institution’s head and heart to make both compatible to contemporary reality. Reform must begin today; tomorrow could be too late."

# Terrorists biggest transgressor of human rights: "Who can be a greater transgressor of human rights than a terrorist? Those who take innocent human lives in pursuit of war by other means are defenders of inhuman behavior, not of human rights. Pakistan glorifies killers; it refuses to see the blood of innocents."

# On Pakistan's allegation of sabotaging peace talks: "We are accused of sabotaging the process of talks. This is a complete lie. We believe that talks are only rational means to resolve the most complex of disputes. Talks with Pakistan have begun many times. If they stopped, it was only because of their behavior."

# EAM Sushma Swaraj on cross-border terrorism: In our case, terrorism is bred not in some faraway land, but across our border. Our neighbour’s expertise is not restricted to spawning grounds for terrorism; it is also an expert in trying to mask malevolence with verbal duplicity.
