Two terror suspects arrested at the Mohali Airport last week have revealed a sinister plot that includes foreign funding and series of grenade blasts across Punjab. Latest media reports say that two suspects – Lakhwir Singh and Surinder Kaur – have told the security agencies that they used to receive huge amount of funds in their accounts to buy weapons and other purposes. Lakhwir Singh, 23, who belongs to Hoshiarpur used to work in Dubai. He had recently returned home when he was arrested at the airport. Whereas Sukhwinder Kaur is a resident of Faridkot. The 33-year-old is unmarried and works as a nurse in Ludhiana.
Arrested last week, the duo was interrogated by the security agencies for a week. Their remand, which ended on Tuesday, has now been extended for two more days. Arrested at the airport, the duo was waiting for a huge cache of grenade that was to be used to carry out the blasts. Punjab’s Special Cell also said that part of cache of grenade was also to be used somewhere else.
Last month, a massive cordon and search operation (CASO) was launched in Pathankot and Gurdaspur districts of Punjab after inputs of a possible terror strike. Over 5,000 personnel took part in the search operation. The decision was taken after Pakistani drone was spotted by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel over Ferozepur district in Punjab.
Drones have become new security headache for the agencies. Last month, police confirmed at least eight drone sorties, carrying 80 kg of weapons that were sent across the border into Punjab by revived Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF) outufit backed by Pakistan and Germany-based terror group. Five people have so far been arrested by Punjab Police in connection with the drone drops.
"The deliveries were made on the intervening nights of September 6/7, 9/10 and the last one on 15/16. The last drone crashed at Rajoke Village, Khalra police station, in Tarn Taran, near a border drain which is 2km from the fencing on the international border with Pakistan," a senior Punjab Police official said.
