New Delhi:

Anju Ghosh, the yesteryear’s matinee star, joined the BJP in presence of Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh in Kolkata. Anju Ghosh is best remembered for her role in Bangladesh's epic blockbuster, 'Beder Meye Josna', which was released on June 9, 1989.The development sparked a massive row in Kolkata with the Trinamool Congress taking sharp swipe at the saffron party. “Soon from Bhartiya Janata to Bangladeshi Janata Party ...... Yeh toh right choice , @DilipGhoshBJP ji. Bangladeshi actress joins @BJP4India . Wow. Truly international party (sic),” tweeted Trinamool Congress Diptansu Chaudhury. Anju Ghosh’s nationality has been a subject of furious debates. However, the BJP has clarified that she holds an Indian passport.

“Today, popular film actor Anju Ghosh is joining our party. She had wanted to join BJP for a long time. Now, we have got the real Beder Meye Josna,” Dilip Ghosh said during a small ceremony at the Bengal BJP’s headquarters in Kolkata. The 63-year-old actor has stayed away from movies for a very long time. She said that she was happy to join the BJP.

It should be noted that campaigning by Bangladeshi actors had caused lots of heartburns and controversies during the Lok Sabha Elections 2019.

Popular Bangladeshi actor Ferdous Ahmed was ordered to leave the country immediately and his business visa cancelled after he was found allegedly campaigning for West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress that sparked a political row. West Bengal state BJP leaders Jay Prakash Majumdar and Sisir Bajoria had also met the state's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ariz Aftab to register a complaint.

"All should vote for the Trinamool Congress. All should vote for didi (TMC chief Mamata Banerjee)," Ahmed was claimed to have told voters while sharing the dais with Kanhaiyalal Agarwal. The Centre had issued a 'Leave India' notice and cancelled the business visa given to the actor. Ahmed has also been "blacklisted" by the Union Home Ministry, thus jeopardising the prospects of his future travel to India.
