Tuticorin: Sulfuric acid leakage in Sterlite's copper plant, experts rushed to spot

New Delhi:

Sulfuric acid leakage has been reported from Sterlite’s copper plant in Tamil Nadu’s Tuticorin (Thoothukudi), which was shut down by the state government after violent protests.

A team of experts rushed to the spot after the reports of chemical leakage surfaced. The leakage was reported in the sulfuric acid warehouse and the process of removing the leakage had been started by experts.

“The process of removing leakage in the sulfuric acid warehouse at the Sterlite plant has begun. All necessary security protocols are being followed,” ANI quoted Thoothukudi collector Sandeep Nanduri as saying.

Earlier in May, over 13 people were killed and scores others were injured in police firing after a month-long protest demanding the closure of Vedanta’s Sterlite Copper unit in Tamil Nadu’s Tuticorin took a violent turn.

After the police firing, Tamil Nadu government was forced to close the Sterlite plant in Tuticorin.
