Ranchi:

A two-member high-level team has been appointed by the Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren to probe the police firing that claimed a life at Pagar village in Hazaribagh district on Tuesday.

North Chhotanagpur Divisional Commissioner Nitin Madan Kulkarni and Inspector-General of Police (Bokaro range) Murari Lal Meena will inquire into the firing and submit the report within a week, official sources said in Ranchi.

The inquiry was instituted after the opposition parties protested during the address to the Assembly by Governor Syed Ahmed on Thursday against the police firing and other incidents across the state during the last six months.

On Wednesday senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha, who represents Hazaribagh Lok Sabha constituency, had demanded a judicial probe by a sitting High Court judge into the killing of a 50-year-old villager and injury to five others in police firing at Pagar under Keradari police station in Hazaribagh district.

The police fired eight rounds to control villagers, who were protesting against construction of a field hostel of the National Thermal Power Corporation after complaining that the PSU allegedly did not pay them a promised compensation.
