In Uttar Pradesh, which has reported several horrific assaults on young girls in the last few days, a 21-year-old college student on Friday succumbed to the injuries after she being gang-raped, allegedly by men known to her, and then set on fire.
The gruesome incident happened in Etawah, the home district of Mulayam Singh Yadav, chief of the Samajwadi Party which rules Uttar Pradesh.
On Thursday evening, the police said, a young man known to the student invited her to his home, where he allegedly ganged up with four other men to rape her.
When the girl resisted and threatened to report them to the police, they allegedly poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.
Neighbours took the girl to the village hospital, which referred her to the better-equipped Saifai hospital as her injuries are very severe.
A case of rape and attempt to murder have been registered, but there have been no arrests in the three days since the incident.
