In a bizarre video which went viral on social media, a teacher from Wagat village of Handwara in north Kashmir could be seen threatening to slaughter a minor student with an axe, leaving the people especially the locals furious. The horrifying incident of corporal punishment was captured on camera.
In the video, a teacher of Bright Future Education Institute in Wagat Handwara wearing pheran and a cap could be seen beating a 10-year-old student repeatedly and threatening with the axe. The student is also seen lying down and his teacher is shockingly threatening him to slaughter for some unknown reasons.
“Close your eyes, Pariv sa Kalima saeri (recite Kalima),” the teacher can be heard saying as he tries to mimick the sacred practice of slaughtering animals.
Meanwhile, the locals of the area demanded stern action against the teacher, saying that it will have a negative impact on the mindset of students.
In 2010, the Ministry of Women and Child Development issued a new set of guidelines that bans physical punishment of students. First violation of the ban will invite up to one year in jail, or a fine of Rs. 50,000 or both. For subsequent violations, imprisonment could be extend to three years with an additional fine of Rs 25,000. Heads of schools will be responsible to prevent corporal punishment. Teachers found guilty could be denied promotion, and even increments.
