Artistes from over 124 countries Tuesday paid a special musical homage to Mahatma Gandhi by singing one of his favourite devotional songs Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye’. On the occasion of Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the medley version of the famous ‘bhajan’ during the closing ceremony of the Mahatma Gandhi International Sanitation Conference in Delhi.
The External Affairs Ministry in a statement said that as a part of the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi, artistes from over 124 countries contributed musically in paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi through his favourite bhajan Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye.

“From Armenia to Angola, Sri Lanka to Serbia, Iraq to Iceland, prominent local singers/groups have showcased their talent to this favourite hymn of the Mahatma. One-two videos from different regions of the world were then put together in a fusion video of about 5 minutes to give a flavour of the bhajan as recorded by different artists,” the MEA said.
The ministry said that the local artistes or a group to record the ‘bhajan’ in the run-up to Gandhi Jayanti were identified by all Indian missions abroad.

The famous devotional song was written by Gujarati poet Narsimha Mehta and was one of the favourite ‘bhajans’ of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi would include the hymn in the roster of prayers routinely sung before his meetings.
