India's largest Coffee chain Cafe Coffee Day owner VG Siddhartha’s decomposed body was found on Wednesday morning on the banks of Netravati River near Hoige Bazaar in Mangaluru. "The body was floating near Hoige Bazaar at 6:30 am. It was brought to the shore by locals and policemen. It has been shifted to Mangalore’s Wenlock hospital for post-mortem," Sandeep Patil, police commissioner Mangalore, said. His body was recovered after 36 hours of massive search operation. VG Siddhartha is the son-in-law of former union minister SM Krishna.

Siddhartha had left from Bengaluru to Sakleshpur in Hassan district in a car on Monday afternoon, but on the way had asked his driver to go towards Mangaluru, the police said.

On reaching the bridge, he alighted from the car and told his driver that he was going for a walk.

"He (Siddhartha) asked the driver to wait till his arrival. When he did not return even after two hours, the driver approached the police and lodged a missing complaint," Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district Senthil Sasikant Senthil was quoted as saying by a news agency.

  • VG Siddhartha was born in Malenadu region of Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru district and did his master’s degree in economics from Mangalore University. He was the son-in-law of S. M. Krishna, the former Chief Minister of Karnataka, Indian Minister for External Affairs and Governor of Maharashtra.
  • He joined J M Financial Limited in 1983-1984 in Mumbai as a management trainee/intern in portfolio management and securities trading on the Indian stock market.
  • 15 years later, Siddhartha established a successful coffee business in Karnataka.
  • VG Siddhartha exports about 28,000 tonnes of coffee annually and sells another 2,000 tonnes locally for about Rs 350 million each year.
  • Siddhartha also founded Global Technology Ventures Ltd. in 2000, a company that identifies, invests and mentors Indian companies engaged in technologies.
  • As of July 2019, there are 1,843 CCD outlets across 28 states of India. Cafe Coffee Day has also expanded outside India with its outlets in Austria (Vienna), Czech Republic, Malaysia, Egypt and Nepal.
