Exactly a month after Pulwama terror attack, India woke up to a rude shock on Thursday as China blocked resolution declaring Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist. In a late night development according to India time, China vetoed the resolution and placed a technical hold on the listing request Azhar at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) 1267 Committee. Despite such global outrage after the February 14 attack, which killed 40 CRPF personnel, the UN vote is seen as a diplomatic defeat for India. The Congress has also slammed the Narendra Modi government over the strategic failure on a global stage. Party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala took to Twitter and chided the NDA government saying, “A sad day in the global fight against terrorism! "After 56 inch's 'hugplomacy' and the game of sitting on a swing also, the China-Pakistan duo is showing red eyes to India," Surjewala added in a tweet in Hindi.

The United Nations vote proves that China is indeed Pakistan’s all-weather friend. Earlier in the day, spokesperson of the Chinese foreign ministry had hinted that China will take action, which is agreeable to all sides. "I could reiterate that China will continue to adopt responsible attitude and participate in the deliberations in the UNSC 1267 Committee," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang was quoted as saying by Press Trust of India in Beijing. "The discussions, I want to say must follow the rules and procedures of the relevant bodies and only the solution that is acceptable to all sides is conducive for resolving the issue," he added.
The proposal to designate Azhar under the 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee of the UN Security Council was moved by France, the UK and the US on February 27, days after a suicide bomber of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) killed 40 CRPF soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama, leading to a flare-up in tensions between India and Pakistan.
Azhar and two other terrorists, Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar and Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, were released from an Indian prison in 1999 by the then BJP-led government headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee in exchange for the passengers held hostage on board flight IC-814 hijacked to Kandahar in Afghanistan.
