The creative director of high-end fashion Chanel and Fendi, Karl Lagerfeld has died at the age of 85. According to French magazine Closer, the German-born designer passed away in Paris after a prolonged illness.

The prolific fashion designer had given the Chanel's Paris haute couture show in January due to ill health. It was for the first time that he had missed the Chanel's show.

Recognised around the world for his distinctive white ponytail, black sunglasses, gloves and high starched collars, the fashion genius was also creative director for Italian fashion house Fendi, owned by LVMH, as well as Karl Lagerfeld glasses and sunglasses.

Many fashion industry big-shots have paid tribute to the iconic designer Lagerfeld, including Italian designer Donatella Versace and Henry Holland.

Holland took to Twitter to pay his own tribute to Lagerfeld with a tweet that read, “To design is to breathe, so if I can’t breathe I’m in trouble” RIP @KarlLagerfeld #karlargerfeld''.
