Lash Lice Becoming More Common Among People With Eyelash Extensions

Mascaras were the magic wand for beauty lovers until eyelash extensions dominated the mainstream market. Like any other advancements aimed to make things more convenient, simpler and more beautiful in this case, eyelash extensions can minus the everyday ritual of spending minutes or even hours in the mirror perfecting the eye-makeup look before stepping out of the door. Doctors have however warned that behind the flowy, flashy lashes also inhabit lash lice which can be a haven for demodex or tiny mites that live in or near hair follicles.

Dr. Sairah Malik told ABC7 how the buildup of bacteria have become more rampant for the demodex due to lack of proper cleaning,

‘’Generally the idea when you have eyelash extensions is that people are afraid to kind of touch them or wash them because they’re afraid the eyelash will fall out’’.

Dr. Malik said that keeping eyelids clean was vital for lash extension users suggesting easily available products such as tea tree base cleanser for cleaning the lashes as tea tree oil acts as an antibacterial and is also a popular essential oil treatment for hair, skin and nails.

‘’We recommend tea tree base cleanser. Any cleanser that has a diluted form of tea tree, and it is a good idea to use on a daily basis’’

Taking a break from your regular eyelash extensions is also advised by Dr. Malik in giving their eyelids a break.
