The rapid spread of the novel coronavirus diesease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic has wreaked havoc globally with over 3,000 deaths and more than 88,000 people infected so far. The deadly virus that first emerged in China in December last year has spread to more than 70 countries. With the situation rapidly evolving, United States' Centre For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is helping people stay informed and safe with updated information about the outbreak. According to CDC, the novel coronavirus behind this outbreak has been named "SARS-CoV-2" and the disease it causes has been named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

According to CDC, there is not much known about how the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) spreads. The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person. You can get infected if you are in close conact (within about 6 feet) of an infected person. You can also get infected from getting in contact with respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs, says CDC. According to information given on CDC website, it is possible to get coronavirus infection by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes.

  • One should avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • One should avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • If you're feeling sick, stay home.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue. Please dispose the tissue in the trash.
  • Keep your frequently touched objects clean and disinfected with regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Your should wash your hands especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  • It is always better to wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.

 

Coronavirus: How To Use Face Mask

 Here are CDC's recommendations for using a facemask.

  • CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
  • Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to  others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).

According to CDC, there is no specific antiviral treatment recommended for COVID-19. People who are infected with novel coronavirus are given supportive care to help relieve thir symptoms. Treatment should include care to support vital organ functions for severe cases.
