New Delhi:

India is a place under the siege of junk food, alcohol and sedentary lifestyle that leads to silent self-destruction and thus in India, one in every five men and women is either obese or overweight. Obesity among children and adolescents is also rising.

No doubt, over-eating excessive intake of food is one of the main reasons of obesity among masses. People who overeat have a clinical disorder called binge eating disorder (BED). People who suffer with BED disorder eat larger amounts of food in short period of time and feel guilt afterward.

But a recent research has now discovered a gene to stop over-eating. Scientists have found a gene that creates a feeling of fullness thus preventing over-eating.

Researchers from Monash University in Melbourne and the University of Copenhagen  told their finding can also lead to development of a drug that reduces appetite and interestingly, also increases the desire for exercise.

The scientists told that the gene which controls signals between brain and intestines was discovered in roundworms and now the same is found in people. It is also believed to be behind the need to sleep after eating, which happens only when the body has stored enough fat.

Associate Professor Roger Pocock who conducted the research said, “When animals are malnourished they seek out food by roaming in their environment. When they're well fed they have no need to roam, and when they're fully sated they enter a sleep-like state."

Dr Pocock further added, "Because roundworms share so many genes with humans they are a great model system to investigate and gain a better understanding of processes like metabolism as well as diseases in humans."

The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could help to provide an alternative method to help people stay slim, said the scientists.
