Skin tanning is what we all hate. We just hate the idea of exposing our skin to that harsh Sun. But apart from making our skin shades darker, Sun does more harm to our skin as well as health.
A new study has found that Sun’s radiations or tanning sessions hasten skin ageing in long run.
Environment damages our skin to the extent we have not even thought of. Short waves, that is ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, cause sunburns and uneven pigmentation while the long wave ultraviolet A (UVA) and infrared radiation penetrate more deeply into skin damaging existing collagen and reduce the production of collagen, that results in wrinkles and sagging skin.
"Ultraviolet radiation from the sun and indoor tanning beds not only can increase your risk of skin cancer but also can contribute to skin ageing," said Arianne Shadi Kourosh, of Massachusetts General Hospital in the US.
"Moreover, other forms of radiation, such as heat and visible light, can negatively impact the skin, as can pollution, so protecting your skin from the environment can benefit both your health and appearance," said Kourosh on Saturday.
Researchers from Massachusetts that too much exposure to ultraviolet rays could cause blood vessels to become prominent, causing skin to turn red.
Visible light and pollution could cause the skin tone making it uneven, especially in cases of darker skin.
"Since both types of ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage the skin, it is important to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that provides both long wave ultraviolet A and short wave ultraviolet B protection, with an SPF of 30 or higher" Kourosh said.
