New Delhi:

International Albinism Awareness Day is observed each year on June the 13th to debunk the myths around the condition, break the stigma and create better awareness. The day came into effect from the year 2015 to commemorate the UN's first resolution to promote and protect the rights of people living with albinism and this year with the theme "Still Standing Strong."

Albinism is a genetic condition where people are born without the usual pigment in their bodies. As such their bodies lack the normal amount of melanin, the chemical that is responsible for eye, skin, and hair colour. Hence, most people with the condition have very pale skin, hair, and eyes. Overall, an estimated 1 in 20,000 people worldwide are born with the oculocutaneous albinism.

However, as a condition that is caused by the lack of melanin, people with albinism are often misjudged and often fall victims to subjugation and delineation by the masses. So, on International Albinism Awareness Day 2019, let us look at the condition in a whole new light.  Being ‘different’ and ‘unique’ is beautiful. We don’t understand why someone who looks as magical as Elsa from Frozen or Queen Freya from The Huntsman: Winter's War should not be considered beautiful.

Here are some of a few examples of beautiful people with the condition:
