New Delhi:

Yup, snoring, the one vibration in bed we do not need. Affecting about 40 percent of adult men and 24 percent of adult women, a new study also found that women miss out on three hours of sleep every night. Now, that is about 1,05 hours a year or 45 days of missed sleep! The study found that one in four women blame their partner's snoring, while 14 per cent say it's always them tending to their kids when they wake up in the night.

While snoring is often who associated with people who have too much throat and nasal tissue or “floppy” tissue that is more prone to vibrate, there are some unexpected reasons that is making us want a room all to ourselves:

You sleep with your back: A sleeping position often seen in men, sleeping on your back could be one of the reasons your partner is awake. “When someone sleeps on the back, there is a natural tendency for the jaw and tongue to drop into the back of the throat,” Marcella M. Frank a sleep medicine specialist at Deborah Heart and Lung Center in Browns Mills, New Jersey explained.

You might be having a thyroid problem: Underactive thyroids of people with hypothyroidism are prone to suffering fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, thinning hair and depression which could contribute to making the sounds at night. “With an under-active thyroid, there may be changes within the upper airway that lead to difficulty breathing during sleep,” said Shoshana Ungerleider an internist at Sutter Health in San Francisco.

You are a man: As ridiculous as this may sound, we have even listed above that women loss almost three hours of sleep every night because of the men sleeping next to them. Before you say even women snore, the reason has more to do with biology. Men have narrower air passages that could exacerbate the snoring issue.

You could be gaining weight: Gaining weights beyond your usual weight limit could also be the reason you are snoring at night. This is because excess body weight can lead to poor muscle tone and an increased amount of tissue around the throat and neck which can worsen the snoring condition.
