New Delhi:

Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) has completed another major milestone on its mission of robotic surgery. The institute has successfully completed its 50th robotic surgery on Saturday. In 2017, Jipmer established a centre for multidisciplinary robot-assisted minimal access surgery.

A team of doctors from the institute, including anesthesiologists headed by Sandeep Mishra, head of anesthesiology, and V.K. Mohan, assistant professor of anesthesiology and urologists led by R. Manikandan, head of the department of urology, was part of this historical process.

The group of doctors performed the robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy in a patient who was suffering from renal cancer.

Jipmer is the only government hospital in South India, which provides the facilities of robotic surgery to patients, said director S.C. Parija.

Moreover, patients can avail this expensive service at a very affordable price at Jipmer in comparison to several corporate hospitals in the country.

While patients are charged a whopping amount of Rs 2 to 3 lakh for such services at corporate hospitals of India, Jipmer charges only 50,000 for the same.

Moreover, a general ward patient is charged only Rs 30,000 for robotic surgeries in Jipmer.

According to Mr. Parija, the institute is also gearing up to start robotically assisted procedures in other departments like paediatric, cardiac, thoracic, vascular, ENT and others.

In Jipmer, the urology department has performed 24 cases, while the department of obstetrics and gynaecology has performed 6 cases.

On the other hand, oncologists and gastroenterologists have performed 10 robotic-assisted surgeries in their respective departments.

Therefore, Jipmer is all geared up for some rapid developments in such high-cost surgeries as they want to make the services available to one and all in India.
