New Delhi:

Depression and anxiety have crippled many people and now the latest study have suggested a remedy to combat these evils.

According to the study, spending some time alone and engaging in something creative may easily reduce the stress level and lower the risk of depression and anxiety.

The researchers explained that creativity reduces stress by helping 'us reach a flow state', in this state the brain works at optimal efficiency, that releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter that regulates emotional responses and further rewards us for both creating and solving problems in the process.

"When people think about the costs associated with social withdrawal, often times they adopt a developmental perspective", said Julie Bowker, Professor at the University of Buffalo in the US.

"Shy and avoidant individuals may be unable to use their solitude time happily and productively, maybe because they are distracted by their negative cognitions and fears."

The team of researchers examined 300 people for the study, who were in a habit of indulging in a decent amount of alone time and questions related to their behaviour were asked.

As per the findings, the people who feel timid or fearful around others tend to make less productive use of their 'me time', while the rest preferred to be alone because it gave them an opportunity to work on creative pursuits.
