World Malaria Day is an international day commemorated every year on 25 April to bring into focus the dangers of mosquito while also recognising the global efforts to control malaria. Globally, 3.3 billion people in 106 countries are at risk of malaria while thousand deaths are reported every year. While we spend an exorbitant sum every year, day to keep those disease-spreading mosquitoes at bay, little do we release that we can shoo the mosquitoes away without any exposure to chemical products.

These home remedies are easily available on our kitchen shelves and works as an effective mosquito-repellent:

Coffee grounds:  Mosquitoes normally breed in water bodies. All you have to do is to do is sprinkle coffee grounds near the water bodies in your house. This will force the mosquito eggs present in the water to come to the surface as they are deprived of oxygen hence killing them before they hatch.

Garlic: Garlic contains mosquito larvicidal properties acting as a natural mosquito repellent. To make an easy home-made mosquito repellent, crush a few cloves of garlic and boil the crushed garlic in water then add in a spray bottle.

Citronella Soap: Instead of applying chemical-induced mosquito repellent, wash yourself with citronella soap and follow by rubbing 100% pure citronella essential oil on your skin. The fresh, lemony fragrance will act as a natural mosquito repellent.

Holy Basil: There is a reason this plant is found in almost every Indian household. Simply plant a holy basil plant in your garden and at the entry points of your home to keep mosquitoes at bay. You can also spray basil oil to repel mosquitoes.
