Shravan, the 5th and the holiest month of Hindu calendar starts from today i.e. July 17. The month as per Hindu mythology is said to be the time when Shiva, the destroyer among the Trimurti consumed the Halahal or poison that came out as the result of ‘Samudra Manthan’ i.e. Churning of the ocean. The devotees worship Lord Shiva and observe fast in the auspicious month of Shravan or Sawan.

In the period of Shravan, the Shiva devotees give up eating non-vegetarian food and consume nutrient rich products. Mondays during this month are considered to be the most auspicious known as ‘Shravan Somwars’.
