Eugene Lee Yang from Buzzfeed’s “The Try Guys,” has come out as gay in a powerful video. The online personality and filmmaker who along with Ned Fulmer, Zach Kornfeld, Keith Habersberger rose to YouTube fame for, as their channel suggests, trying out some of the pretty much anything for the audience's entertainment released his most personal video yet, “I’m Gay.”
The elaborate short film, which Yang wrote, directed, and choreographed to music by Odesza, explores his challenging journey toward self-acceptance growing up as a Korean-American growing up in a small-town Texas upbringing, brutal hate crime against homosexuals through contemporary movement.
The video, dedicated at the end to “the LGBTQIA+ community,” also features RuPaul’s Drag Race queens Kim Chi and Mayhem Miller.
“I created this music video as my personal way of coming out as a proud gay man who has many unheard, specific stories to tell,” Yang writes. “I withheld because of fear and shame shaped by my background but I promise to give my full truth in the rest of my life’s work.”
Yang also linked the video to a fundraiser he created for the Trevor Project “to help save LGBTQ+ lives,” he continues. “Coming out is a lifelong process—your safety always comes first—but know that there’s a vibrant community waiting to welcome you with open arms.”
Last fall Yang also did a Twitter takeover for HRC, commemorating the 30th anniversary of National Coming Out Day by advocating for LGBTQ representation in the media.
“I was always performing as a kid, but it wasn’t until I pursued a career in film that I saw my work online impact other LGBTQ people of color,” he tweeted. “I learned how important it was for them to see themselves in the stories I told’’ Eugene then tweeted.
Just few days ago, YouTuber and BBC host Dan Howell also came out as gay.
